Writing with toddlers underfoot

For two years my writing desk was the passenger seat of a parked car. I wrote during naps, during dance class, during the ten minutes before the school bell.

The advice to 'protect your creative time' assumes you have some to protect. What I had was scraps, so I learned to write in scraps.

Here's what actually helped: keeping one document open on my phone, ending every session mid-sentence so I knew where to pick up, and forgiving myself weekly instead of daily.
