What representation actually does to a four-year-old

There's a moment I keep coming back to. She turned the page, saw a little girl with puffs like hers, and said — quietly, like she'd found a secret — 'that's me.'
That's the entire argument. Not policy, not market share. A child recognising herself and deciding, on the spot, that she belongs in stories.
Every book I write is aimed at that half-second of recognition.
